The Power Plant Gallery at Duke University seeks submissions of photographic and moving image work for an upcoming exhibition entitled Intimate Visions. The relationship between artist and muse is one of mutual revelation, but that historically has been populated by a male gaze. In this iteration curated by Vit Bitencourt, Intimate Visions seeks works from artists that explore the breadth and complexity of intimate partnerships, and portrayals that bring forth new narratives, expanding the image of the “muse.”

“There is no more important event than seeing and being seen.” -Ray Carney

Photographs of intimate relationships and moments speak of both small peculiarities of one’s identity and universal feelings of love and belonging. They turn both the camera and the photograph into a mirror, posing questions we might spend our whole existence contemplating: who are we, why do we matter, and what is love?

About the Curator: Vit Bitencourt is an MFA candidate in the Experimental and Documentary Arts program at Duke University and a gallery assistant at the Power Plant Gallery in Durham, NC. Previously, she has served as curatorial assistant for photography at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC and student gallery director of the Ethel H. Blum Gallery in Bar Harbor, ME.
